{"id":6713,"date":"2013-08-04T12:00:22","date_gmt":"2013-08-04T11:00:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/greensideup.ie\/?p=6713"},"modified":"2014-09-27T14:14:17","modified_gmt":"2014-09-27T13:14:17","slug":"sunday-snap-bees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/greensideup.ie\/sunday-snap-bees\/","title":{"rendered":"Sunday Snap ~ Sleepy bees"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It seems appropriate to share another bee photo <a title=\"Worldwide Honey Bee Collapse Information\" href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/2013\/worldwide-honey-bee-collapse-a-lesson-in-ecology\/\" target=\"_blank\">given the challenges they&#8217;re facing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This little one was taking a rest on the salads that have gone to seed in our polytunnel, helping to ease my conscience that I haven&#8217;t spent much time in there of late. Apple and pear orchards are now being hand pollinated as a result.<\/p>\n<p>However, there is still hope. In the US and Europe it&#8217;s been found that simply planting strips of wildflowers alongside fields on farms and along roadside verges and leaving areas of natural vegetation in forests can help to boost pollinator populations enormously.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So on behalf of the bees<\/strong>, if you haven&#8217;t done so already I&#8217;m making a plea for you to grow more <a title=\"RHS List of Pollinator Plants\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rhs.org.uk\/Gardening\/Sustainable-gardening\/pdfs\/RHS_Pollinators_PlantList\" target=\"_blank\">bee friendly flowers<\/a>, allow more wildflowers to flourish and to stop using pesticides. There are alternatives to spraying the bugs and weeds you don&#8217;t want in your garden. It might take a little time and inconvenience until balance is restored but in the meantime you&#8217;ll get used to seeing holes in the leaves and the odd weed appearing in your pathway. You&#8217;ll begin to notice more butterflies, hoverflies, lacewings and pollinators visiting your flowers and come to accept it all as part of natures pattern.<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s a little inconvenience compared to life without bees?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A plea for
