I\u2019d talked the talk\u2026 was I going to walk the walk?\u00a0Saturday, 14th May\u00a0201 1 is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wngd.org\/\">World Naked Gardening Day <\/a>and Facebook and Twitter have been awash with comments about it.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>In the end what swayed me to take part in this interesting sounding occasion wasn\u2019t my overwhelming desire to get naked outside, but the reaction of my three children when I told them I was thinking of doing so. They were completely mortified and once they realised that I might actually do it, even more so.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>I then found myself explaining that we\u2019re all born naked and that it\u2019s a perfectly natural state to be in a safe environment etc&#8230;\u00a0Sadly they were unable to explain to me why they were so hung up about the idea of wearing no clothes, and\u00a0NO WAY\u00a0were they going to join me. \u00a0Already, they\u2019d been programmed (or had we brought them up?) to think of nakedness as being very wrong.\u00a0 They giggled, laughed and cringed, not taking me seriously at all, so that was it. I didn\u2019t mention it again but always game for a bit of a challenge&#8230;<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>After completing their morning activity drop offs, I arrived home and headed outside, determined to go for it before I changed my mind.\u00a0 A couple of points here\u2026 it was windy and cold\u00a0this morning in our rural\u00a0location so gardening outside was completely out of the question. \u00a0Also, it couldn\u2019t be guaranteed that the neighbouring farmer wouldn\u2019t arrive suddenly to check his cattle so the only place I was willing to shed my\u00a0kit was in the Polytunnel. It was a cosy 20\u00b0C and there were no chilly breezes either.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Also, just to be clear, other than an occasional walk around the house in my birthday suit when the house was quiet, getting naked outside wasn\u2019t something that I\u2019d ever done before.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-m_inbEBuvdw\/Tc6PETDrFgI\/AAAAAAAAAu0\/NC920IAIPPc\/s1600\/P5141335.JPG\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-m_inbEBuvdw\/Tc6PETDrFgI\/AAAAAAAAAu0\/NC920IAIPPc\/s320\/P5141335.JPG?resize=320%2C240\" alt=\"\" width=\"320\" height=\"240\" border=\"0\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div>So once in the Polytunnel, having checked that\u00a0there was nobody around, I took off all my clothes.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>In actual fact that was the worse bit as I couldn\u2019t help but feel a bit daft as I stripped off, wondering to myself what an earth I was doing.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;\">Donning only my silver pumps (this was a special event) I immediately headed to the potting bench where I could safely stand and transplant a few cauliflower and kale seedlings. After a few minutes and feeling a bit more adventurous I started to move around and tackle some stray weeds.<\/div>\n<div>Surprisingly I enjoyed the feeling of\u00a0walking around\u00a0naked, just me and my veggies in an (almost) natural\u00a0environment with the sun shining down, so feeling a tad\u00a0braver I started looking for more things to do. I transplanted some tarragon seedlings, replaced a few munched up beans with some fresh ones and tidied the paths. I then sat and admired my work, enjoying the sensation of the sun on my skin.<\/div>\n<div><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-w5_PdzMzM7Q\/Tc6PYpJga0I\/AAAAAAAAAu4\/3B75S4IoiJk\/s1600\/P5141333.JPG\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-w5_PdzMzM7Q\/Tc6PYpJga0I\/AAAAAAAAAu4\/3B75S4IoiJk\/s320\/P5141333.JPG?resize=320%2C240\" alt=\"\" width=\"320\" height=\"240\" border=\"0\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div>Being new to naked gardening,\u00a0it hadn\u2019t occurred to me that I would have nothing to wipe my hands on (usually jeans), or that it&#8217;s a good idea to fill up the watering can beforehand (the tap\u2019s by the front gate). I also had to evict a bumblebee and a horsefly. Other than that nothing extraordinary happened. I just pottered around in the buff.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>After 45 minutes my little sojourn was over. It was back to the realities of child pick-ups and drop offs and I reluctantly dressed again.<\/div>\n<div><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-c_Ac0f9Ee_8\/Tc6PrGV4peI\/AAAAAAAAAu8\/fkWp3kB_9kU\/s1600\/P5141338.JPG\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-c_Ac0f9Ee_8\/Tc6PrGV4peI\/AAAAAAAAAu8\/fkWp3kB_9kU\/s320\/P5141338.JPG?resize=320%2C240\" alt=\"\" width=\"320\" height=\"240\" border=\"0\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>However, the short experience was enough to leave me with a different state of mind.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;\">My body is fit and healthy. It allows me to walk and to dance, to work and to love. It\u2019s borne and breastfed three children. Yes, it has its wobbly bits \u2013 let\u2019s face it, as much as we\u2019d all love to have figures like Helen Mirren the reality is that most of us on the wrong side of 40 are unlikely to.<\/div>\n<div>What it did bring home to me was that\u00a0women of all ages have to learn to accept and love their bodies just the way they are. We&#8217;re too easily swayed by magazines,\u00a0tv and even other girl friends. We&#8217;re so hung up about how we look we forget that it&#8217;s what&#8217;s on the inside that matters the most.<\/div>\n<div>So if feeling better about who\u00a0and what we are\u00a0means getting in the nip once a year on World Naked Gardening Day (or more if you\u2019re game for <a href=\"http:\/\/dipinthenip.eu\/\">Dip In the Nip<\/a>), then so be it&#8230;.
