Something always seems to want to eat my brassicas!<\/span><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a style=\"clear: left; cssfloat: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_OvxlUzzvECE\/TFxLDW4vt2I\/AAAAAAAAASY\/nsu77MZHwyU\/s1600\/Mealy+Cabbage+Aphid+2.JPG\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_OvxlUzzvECE\/TFxLDW4vt2I\/AAAAAAAAASY\/nsu77MZHwyU\/s640\/Mealy+Cabbage+Aphid+2.JPG?resize=640%2C480\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" border=\"0\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/span><\/a><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;\">These were found on the tips of the sprouts last week and weren&#8217;t immediately obvious.\u00a0 We first noticed yellow patches on the young leaves that were starting to wrinkle.\u00a0 On closer examination (hidden inside the new leaf) we found this colony of Mealy Cabbage Aphid.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><a style=\"clear: left; cssfloat: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_OvxlUzzvECE\/TFxJnPoSzCI\/AAAAAAAAASQ\/wsxWPgSx1Vk\/s1600\/Mealy+Cabbage+Aphid.JPG\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_OvxlUzzvECE\/TFxJnPoSzCI\/AAAAAAAAASQ\/wsxWPgSx1Vk\/s320\/Mealy+Cabbage+Aphid.JPG?resize=320%2C240\" width=\"320\" height=\"240\" border=\"0\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/span><\/a><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;\">A heavy attack can kill the tips of the shoots which may encourage new side shoots.\u00a0 The aphids\u00a0also like the taste of radish and swede so keep an eye on those veggies too.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;\">As they are a sap eating insect (and can therefore spread virus&#8217;)\u00a0control is encouraged.\u00a0 <a title=\"Kitchen remedies for pests\" href=\"http:\/\/greensideup.ie\/pesticides-and-fungicides-using-kitchengarden-ingredients\/\" target=\"_blank\">An insecticidal soap spray can be used (see blog on home made recipes)<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;\">We suffered a similar problem last\u00a0October on the kale.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;\">This year I&#8217;ve removed the infected leaves as I&#8217;m attempting to garden without the use of any sprays, including home made soap or garlic.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;\">Although the broad beans were heavily infected with black bean aphid, it was interesting to observe how many\u00a0predatory insects were on the plants too &#8211; particularly ladybirds and what I&#8217;m fairly certain\u00a0were soldier beetles, offering some form of control.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last year it was caterpillars, this year it&#8217;s aphids.
